Making Disciples of Jesus to the Glory of God
Friends and Supporters,
I am deeply grateful for your partnership with Citylight New York. Because of your prayers and generosity, we are making disciples of Jesus for the glory of God in New York City.
After you have suffered a little while, [God] will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. (1 Peter 5:10)
This verse beautifully captures what the Lord has done in our family and church over the past year.
When we arrived in New York, our vision was simple: plant our family, plant a core team, plant the church, and—by God's grace—plant more churches. Today, phase one is complete, and as our core team approaches twenty people, we are prayerfully aiming to complete phase two by Easter 2026.
One year ago, we were the size of a small bible study. We were not yet gathering weekly for worship, no one had come to faith through our ministry, and our family had been in the city only four months.
Today, because of your support:
Thank you for walking with us through prayer and generosity. We look forward to all the Lord will do through our partnership in 2026.
With gratitude in Christ,
Timothy Shutes
Church Planter, Citylight New York
Our first six months of ministry in New York City culminated in an Easter gathering of 24 people—including our first new believer. Just two months later, however, ten regular attendees and six core team members were called by God to move out of the city.
In that season, the church leaned deeply into prayer and community. The Lord used this time of loss to unite us and renew our commitment to seek Him together.
"My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:19)
And He did.
It wasn't long after these gospel goodbyes that the Lord began adding to our number. Through several providential connections, we met young adults—mostly in their mid-20s—living in downtown Manhattan.
Though their stories differed, they shared a common thread: they had been disconnected from church and sensed a call to re-engage in a gospel-centered community.
From these relationships, we launched a new downtown Citygroup that now gathers 8–12 young adults each week for meals, fellowship, Bible study, and prayer.
Recently, we welcomed three new covenant members from our downtown Citygroup, with more expected in the coming months.
We are prayerfully aiming to reach 20 covenant members by Easter 2026.
For nearly a year, our worship gatherings met in our living room. While we cherished that season as a house church, we are grateful to now gather at Hephzibah House on West 75th Street.
This space has been a gift to our church, especially as it allows us to offer Citylight Kids. Each week, our children hear the gospel in ways designed just for them.
We're thankful for this provision and hopeful to outgrow the space and move to a morning service later this year.
Over the past year, our church has shared more than 100 meals together. As our church has grown, so has our commitment to prayer, hospitality, and personal evangelism.
Our members regularly pray for friends and coworkers who don't know Jesus and look for natural ways to share Christ:
Our ultimate desire is simple: to see many come to know Jesus as Lord through faithful presence, shared meals, and the clear proclamation of the gospel.
Looking Ahead
We are raising $1 million in combined internal and external support to fund the next 18–24 months of ministry. This will allow us to:
New York City presents a uniquely long and costly onramp for church planting. Our aim is not quick growth, but the long-term establishment of a healthy church that will endure for decades. With only 3–5% of the population identifying as Christian, millions in our metro area still need the gospel—and we believe the harvest is plentiful.
Thank you for your partnership in the gospel.
